I received a bottle of the new Voyant Chai Cream Liqueur in the mail a week or so ago, and just tried it last night. I am writing recipes for Frontiers magazine these days, but I don't think I'll publish any cocktails made with this liqueur. That's not because I don't like it, but because it's fantastic on its own.
My friend Vanessa was over when I cracked the bottle. She and I have a long history of drinking together, and I knew when I smelled it that she would recognize it too. I handed her a glass with Voyant in it, she took a whiff and said, "Butterball!"
Back in Boston, in the winters we'd drink the Butterball, made with only Bailey's Irish Cream and butterscotch Schnapps (I think at a 1/3 to 2/3 ratio). It was sweet, creamy, and quite thick- the perfect drink for freezing cold, snow-bound nights when we'd stay indoors and drink ourselves fat.
Voyant Chai Liqueur has that candy-cream element too it, with the black tea spices of chai on top that allows it a more grown-up taste. It's only 25 proof (vodka is 80, some wines are 30) so it doesn't have any sort of harsh kick. Serve it with a couple of ice cubes to get that warm fireplace feeling inside, no matter how cold the night. Yum!
