Modern cocktailing casualty

In bars without cocktail menus, do you freeze up when thinking of what to order? I drink all the time, but when I get to a regular bar without a menu suddenly I can only think of three drinks and I don't want any of them at that moment. Then I'll just order a beer. This never used to happen.

Beer or G&T.

I know exactly what you mean. Maybe it'd be as if after having a great lover, you ended up with someone who just lies there giving no indication of either what they like or think you might like; uninspiring.

In the analogous bar situation, my approach is to satisfy my needs while perhaps providing a little instruction and walk the bartender through a Negroni. (I contrive to avoid the bed version).

definitely. all i can think of sans menu is manhattan, g&t, or martini, three drinks that i do so love, but am not necessarily always in the mood to drink. but i also find that cocktail menus can make you feel relegated to what's on the list, which sometimes i don't want, either. speaking of...
is it just me, or lately does it seem that unless you're in the best possible hands, drinks wind up tasting awfully sweet. i was at a new Mexican restaurant in NYC called Cabrito 2 nights ago waiting for a friend. there's been a little buzz about the place and, judging by the list, i thought that the cocktails sounded like they'd put some thought into them. i ordered their take on a Ramos Fizz, because it sounded like fun. after it cooled down a little, it tasted eerily like a Fuzzy Navel. Ew. Anyhoodle...what was my point? Oh yeah. Sweet drinks. Bad.

Lol, thank God I live in NYC and am fortuante enough to only go to places like Death & Co, Tailor and Pegu bit if my snobby ass gets dragged to a regular bar I usually play it safe with a top shelf bourbon (Maker's, Woodford, Cognac or a rum and coke.

I do love me some Pegu and Little Branch. Angel's Share is always better than I think it's going to be, but I often it exists, too. Want to try out Jake Walk soon from the Smith & Vine folks. I know they're touting it as more of a wine bar, but I think they're doing some serious bourbon stuff there, too. Or maybe I'm corn-fused.

The problem is that now that I've discovered fancy tonic water, I can't go back to the stuff out of the gun. I'm ruined I tell you, ruined!

Right on about the tonic water.

All these fancy cocktail menus have caused me a problem too, as I keep trying to order things that some other bar as described as standards, only to be met with blank looks and leafing through some bar book. The results are not generally good.
