Stress for Less

I needed a wheeled suitcase thingy for my upcoming press trip to Copenhagen and Stockholm (p.s. I'm going on a press trip to Copenhagen and Stockholm!) so I decided to stop in to Ross while at the nearby Office Depot picking up some $30 inkjet toner. (p.s. fuck that noise.)

I've been in this Ross a couple of times, but it is so ghetto that I didn't stay for long and never bought anything. I'm usually fine with bargain stores like Ross and Marshall's, but all the ones I've been to in San Francisco are disgusting. Not only do they have tiny narrow aisles filled with big fat ladies, nobody cleans these stores or picks up the items strewn about during the day. Then you get to the registers that are staffed by bitter old ladies with no sense of hustle.

So on this day at Ross, I found a large selection of rolling suitcases. Most of them were the super cheap $30 kind. I'm not opposed to low-quality cheapness, but these brands were labeled suspiciously like other brands, such as "Swiss Corps" and "American Traveler." I don't need a fancy label, but I really don't want a fancy label knockoff. Anyway, I found a nice Samsonite (real one) for $70. I figured, I'll probably have the thing for ten years so what the heck. It's not worth running all over town to try to save twenty bucks.

So then I had to go wait in the very long line. At this Ross, there are only four cash registers. Two of them are for purchases only, and the other two are for customer service as well. Not wanting to be caught behind screaming ghetto whores trying to get refunds on smelly, pre-worn items, I waited in the normal (longer) line.

I was the only unaccompanied male in line. There were one or two unaccompanied females, but the vast majority of people were females with a three-child minimum.

Fans, having three children is fine- if you can afford to hire staff to raise them. Bringing your three (or more) children with you out in public to run around and scream and annoy other people is fucking trashy.

Everyone was chewing gum, which I didn't realize was so nasty until I saw so many people doing it at once. And these are the kind of people who spit things out of their mouths wherever it's convenient.

As we neared the register, the cashier ran out of change. It took ten minutes to get more. Then the person before me needed a price check. Unfortunately, there are no employees on the floor to do price checks before 5:30PM. So they have this huge store and not a single person in it to assist customers.

Forty five minutes later, I made my purchase (total time = less than 2 minutes) and was on my way to roll my beautiful new Samsonite suitcase through the puddles of urine and vomit and feces all the way home. It would have been worth paying another hundred bucks for a suitcase just to have that miserable hour of my life back.
